Triangle-free geometric intersection graphs with large chromatic number

چکیده
Several classical constructions illustrate the fact that the chromatic number of a graph may be arbitrarily large compared to its clique number. However, until very recently no such construction was known for intersection graphs of geometric objects in the plane. We provide a general construction that for any arc-connected compact set X in R that is not an axis-aligned rectangle and for any positive integer k produces a family F of sets, each obtained by an independent horizontal and vertical scaling and translation of X, such that no three sets in F pairwise intersect and χ(F) > k. This provides a negative answer to a question of Gyárfás and Lehel for L-shapes. With extra conditions we also show how to construct a triangle-free family of homothetic (uniformly scaled) copies of a set with arbitrarily large chromatic number. This applies to many common shapes, like circles, square boundaries or equilateral L-shapes. Additionally, we reveal a surprising connection between coloring geometric objects in the plane and on-line coloring of intervals on the line.

On-Line Approach to Off-Line Coloring Problems on Graphs with Geometric Representations
The main goal of this paper is to formalize and explore a connection between chromatic properties of graphs with geometric representations and competitive analysis of on-line algorithms, which became apparent after the recent construction of triangle-free geometric intersection graphs with arbitrarily large chromatic number due to Pawlik et al. We show that on-line graph coloring problems give ...

Recently, Pawlik et al. have shown that triangle-free intersection graphs of line segments in the plane can have arbitrarily large chromatic number. Specifically, they construct triangle-free segment intersection graphs with chromatic number Θ(log log n). Essentially the same construction produces Θ(log log n)-chromatic triangle-free intersection graphs of a variety of other geometric shapes—th...

Recently, it was proved that triangle-free intersection graphs of n line segments in the plane can have chromatic number as large as (log log n). Essentially the same construction produces (log log n)-chromatic triangle-free intersection graphs of a variety of other geometric shapes—those belonging to any class of compact arcconnected sets in R2 closed under horizontal scaling, vertical scaling...

For a graph G and an integer k ≥ 2, let χk(G) denote the minimum number of colors in a coloring of the vertices of G such that no k-clique of G is monochromatic. In particular, χ2(G) is the ordinary chromatic number of G. It is known that triangle-free segment intersection graphs can have arbitrarily large chromatic number. It is also known that Kk-free string graphs can have arbitrarily large ...
متن کاملColouring geometric overlap graphs
Recently, Pawlik et al. [3] have shown that triangle-free intersection graphs of line segments can have arbitrary large chromatic number, thus answering a long standing conjecture of Erdős [1] in the negative. They show this by constructing a sequence of graphs that have chromatic number tending to infinity. In fact, the chromatic number is O(log logn) where n is the number of vertices. Graphs ...
